For years now I’ve wondered what the difference is between curtains and drapes. For a while, I thought that they were the same thing. So I decided to find out the answer to this question once and for all: are curtains and drapes the same thing?
The answer is a resounding NO. Curtains are made out of lighter fabrics, such as cotton, sheer or translucent materials, and are cheaper to buy because there is less fabric to manufacture. Curtains do not provide much privacy, and they do let light through, but if you are simply looking to dress up a room while taking the glare away from your window, curtains are a great option. The best part is that you can find a variety of colors and lengths to match just about any window in your home; some rooms that would benefit from curtains are the living room, sunroom and dining room.
Drapes are made of a heavier material, they are designed to block out light, so they usually have a lining. The lining is made from an opaque rubber backing that absorbs the light and heat from the sun, which can help save on your energy bills. These are great to use in a movie theater room in your home, or a child’s bedroom, where you want the most sun possible blocked out. Drapes are more expensive than curtains, however, so it would be a good idea to plan ahead of time where in your home you would most need them.
So before you walk into a home goods store to make your purchase, take a look at the various rooms in your house and decide what kind of look you are going for with your windows. Privacy? Not so much privacy? There are lots of different options out there, but if you go in with a plan, shopping will be a breeze.
